Zagora: The Sahara for People Who Don't Have 3 Days

 

Zagora solves a specific problem: you want the Sahara, you have 2 days, and you are not willing to spend 18 hours in a vehicle for one night in the desert.

The drive from Marrakech to Zagora is 5 to 6 hours — through the Draa Valley, past palm groves and ancient kasbahs, with the desert arriving gradually rather than all at once. The road itself is one of the most beautiful in Morocco.

The dunes at Zagora — specifically at Mhamid, 100 km further — are not as tall as Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. The landscape is different: flatter, more austere, less visually dramatic in the classic postcard sense. But the silence is the same. The night sky is the same. The Gnawa music at camp is the same.

For a traveler with 2 days, Zagora is the honest recommendation. For a traveler with 3 or 4 days who wants the most dramatic dune landscape in Morocco, Merzouga is worth the extra distance.

The mistake is booking Merzouga on a 2-day itinerary because the photos are better. The experience will not match the photos if you spend most of it in a vehicle.

A good local operator will tell you this before you book. A platform taking 25% commission will sell you what generates the most revenue.
