Merzouga: The Desert Nobody Tells You Is 9 Hours Away

 

Every travel blog has photos of Merzouga. Almost none of them mention the drive.

Merzouga is 560 kilometers from Marrakech. The drive takes 9 to 10 hours — through the High Atlas, past Ouarzazate, through the Draa Valley and Todra Gorge, across the Tafilalt plain. It is one of the most spectacular drives in North Africa. It is also a full day in a vehicle.

This matters because most travelers book a 2-day Merzouga tour and do not do the math: 9 hours there, 1 night in the desert, 9 hours back. That is 18 hours of driving for one sunset.

The correct version is 3 days minimum — ideally 4. This gives you the drive as an experience rather than an ordeal, a full night in the desert with time to actually be there rather than just arrive and leave, and the return journey at a pace that lets you stop at Ait Ben Haddou or the Dades gorge.

Erg Chebbi, the dune field near Merzouga, rises to 150 meters. The sunset from the top changes the sand from gold to orange to red to purple in 20 minutes. The night sky without light pollution shows you the Milky Way as a solid object. These things are worth the drive — when you plan the drive correctly.
