Mhamid: Where the Road Ends and the Desert Begins

 

Mhamid is the last town before the Sahara in the Draa Valley. After Mhamid, there is no more asphalt. The road becomes piste — tracks in the sand — and the desert begins in the serious sense of the word.

Most travelers do not make it to Mhamid. They stop at Zagora, which is more developed and easier to reach. Which is exactly why Mhamid is worth the extra 100 kilometers.

Erg Chigaga, the dune field accessible from Mhamid by a 2-hour 4x4 crossing, is one of the least visited large dune systems in Morocco. No paved road reaches it. No tour bus drops passengers there. The camps are smaller, the crowds are absent, and the silence is the kind that becomes uncomfortable if you are not used to it.

This is not the Merzouga experience — polished, accessible, well-photographed. This is the desert at the edge of infrastructure. Some travelers find this is exactly what they came for. Others realize on arrival that they preferred the idea of remoteness to the actual thing.

Mhamid is a 6 to 7 hour drive from Marrakech. It requires at least 3 days to do properly — ideally 4. The drive through the Draa Valley, past the palmeries and the ancient ksar villages, is one of the most underrated roads in Morocco.
